The Full Story
Our industrial, monocropping system is causing the fertility of the soil to blow and wash away, so more costly inputs are needed while polluting our waterways with hazerdous chemicals. For every ton of corn a farmer pulls off the land, he loses one ton of topsoil - on average, four tons per acre. We're also destroying biodiversity and our capacity to grow food in the future.
We must re-create and re-diversify a regionally based food system to produce food closer to where it's consumed. Monocropping, long distance supply lines and severe drought in California create unnecessary risk and greatly reduce food security for the nation.
Why Now? European and Global dependence on Russian natural gas has driven up ferilizer costs by 200% since 2020. Higher nitrogen costs will affect farmer decisions, likely reducing fertilizer inputs, which can reduce corn crop yields by as much as 40% (without fertilizers), affecting commodity prices, food prices, and global hunger.
Capital markets are now taking notice of regenerative agriculture as a means to reduce the risk of volatile input prices and dependence on synthetic fertilizers, improving yields and reducing input costs. Healthier soils from regenerative ag also reduces the need for harmful pesticides, rewarding ESG companies.
The Terrible
Loss of Biodiversity
There are half the number of insects in North America than in the 1960's. We have 30% fewer birds flying over our heads than in the 1970's. It's all related to the deadly chemical pesticides used in industrial agriculture.
Without insects the rest of life, including humanity, “would mostly disappear from the land. And within a few months.”
-Renowned Harvard entomologist E.O. Wilson
